Day 1

I'm taking part in NAPOWRIMO this year, in which you write a poem a day for the whole of April. So here is the first:

Icaraus

I leapt & showed the heavens a clean pair of heels.
I know how to fall & make it look like flying,
suspend gravity for one beat, two beats,
my outline edged with gold. You might think
the trick is in the catch & hold, the tuck & roll,
but it's not. It's in the heart; the belief
that I can cleave space apart & come to earth
unharmed,
